So here we are teachers. Another year almost expended. All our plans, aspirations, and desires for the 2022 new year, either have come to fruition or have been put on hold or thrown into the “cancel, delete or try again later” pile. The end of an academic year is certainly a busy time for teachers as we scramble frantically to get all the administrative work and school requirements done. While some feel a sense of accomplishment, some of us feel deflated, while still others may feel indifferent, glad that the academic year is here and looking forward to the break. But, before we call it a day, let me ask you this …

What do you hear echoing down the empty hallways of 2022?

As you stack up the chairs in preparation for the end of the year. I am sure that there are moments of “Did I do my best?” that cross your mind. There have been highs and lows, successes, and failures, big plans, and disappointments. There are things that worked, things that you could have done better, moments of frustration, moments of pride and adulation. Reflecting on your past experiences and how they benefitted your students, their accomplishments and your success in planning and delivering a meaningful lesson are necessary. What imprint have you left in the hallway of 2022?

Your 10 Q reflection checklist:

Reflection is a basic teaching requirement. It is not only useful for you as a teacher to reflect on your professional practice. You can also change the questions and get your students to reflect on their learning by thinking about the purpose, outcomes, skill, or knowledge you wish to teach. You can also reflect on student performance as a class, subject, department or as a school. A school with a culture of reflection stands a better chance of success than one that does not.

Looking ahead!

While reflection is one of the strategies that we sometimes circumvent, often feeling that it has no place in our busy lives, it is always necessary to look at what we had planned and whether it worked out. A GROWTH MINDSET is a good precursor to reflection because it precludes judgement and focuses on development. Understanding the “WHY?” before we hurry ahead to the next lesson, or the next day, or even the next year, helps us to contemplate the actions and adjustments that we need to make prior to moving forward; the options that we have or may not have envisaged before and amendments that may be necessary for further progress. Have you stayed in your comfort zone, or moved to your development zone?

What comes next, what is your next step?

Challenge yourself!

If all of this sounds overwhelming, RELAX; you are not alone! What we need to understand is that nine times out of ten, we are giving of our absolute best. Reflection is merely there to ensure that we are not remaining static in our knowledge, experience, and practices and that we can acknowledge and communicate the areas where modifications can be made for further development and progress. Once we know how, it gets easier.

And finally,

You are enough!

Once you get into the habit of reflecting, you will further develop your skills and your confidence as you develop an awareness of your strengths and limitations, and how to make them work for you. Starting is always a good start: ) What more can we say? We wish you well on your learning journey and a very happy and productive working environment.
